Flyers win and Sixers split

Jeff Carter’s game-winner was his 19th goal of the year.

Here’s a quick recap of this weekend’s action in Philadelphia sports. The Flyers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on the road. Jeff Carter netted the game-winner late in overtime. The goal was Carter’s 19th of the season, which makes him the NHL leader. Mike Richards scored the Flyers’ other goal and Antero Niittymaki made 35 saves. It was a nice win for the Flyers, who return to the ice on Tuesday when they host the New York Islanders.

Let’s Go Flyers!

On the other hand, the Sixers continue to be wildly inconsistent. They picked up a huge win on Friday in Detroit, but then looked awful on Saturday at home against New Jersey. On Friday, Donyell Marshall hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 35 seconds left in the game as the Sixers erased a 15-point second half deficit on their way to a 96-91 win. Andre Miller led the Sixers with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Andre Iguodala added 14 points and 8 rebounds, while Louis Williams scored 16 points off the bench. For some reason, the Sixers are now 3-1 against Allen Iverson.

Then on Saturday, the Sixers looked flat. Philly hung around for three quarters and then forgot how to score on their way to a 95-84 loss to the New Jersey Nets. Iguodala paced the Sixers with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists. Miller added 16 points and 5 assists, while Williams and Marshall each contributed 13 points off the bench. New Jersey’s Devin Harris was the star of the game with 27 points and 8 assists. The Sixers just can’t seem to figure it out, and it looks like it will be an uphill battle to make the playoffs. They were clearly way over-hyped before the season started. The Sixers return to the court on Wednesday when they host LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Another loss is definitely on the way.

Go Sixers.
